Whitesands dumfries Egg Dunreggan view

The Millhouse is set the picturesque hamlet of Tynron, which lies between the villages of Moniaive and Penpont.

Relatively untouched by modern progress, Tynron has a peaceful green and natural environment. Its small population of around 150 is spread out over a surprisingly large area of nine square miles. There are many walks and cycle trials to explore, not to mention much wildlife to see and fantastic clean country air to breathe.

Tynron is four miles from the nearest main road, which means traffic can rarely be heard, even in the distance. It also means that cars seldom pass through, affording a true feeling of being away from it all.

The nearest shops and pubs are in the neighbouring villages of Moniaive two miles to the west and in Penpont three miles to the south.

Moniaive nestles in beautiful countryside where three glens meet. A bustling village with a strong community spirit and long history; Moniaive was home to James Paterson, a founder member of the Glasgow Boys.

Visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the extent of facilities a small village like Moniaive has to offer, including two pubs, Green Tea House, Organic Cafe, Post Office, Health and Beauty Salon, garage and general store open seven days a week.

The George is one of the oldest pubs in the UK with records of ownership over 500 years!  The Criagdarroch is a larger pub yards away.  Both pubs in Moniaive were refurbished in 2007.  The Criagdarroch has reopened as a gastropub.   Advanced booking is advised over weekends, since the pub is very popular.

The village is busy with different events throughout the year such as the Moniaive Gala, Flower Show, Horse Show, Sheepdog Trials, Folk Festivals, Art Exhibitions, Beer Festival and Comic Festival.   This list is not complete without mentioning the famous Hogmany on New Years Eve, which lasts for three days.
Moniave Moniave Thornhill

Moniaive is home to not only many artists, musicians and craftsmen, but writers too!  This is reflected in the number of diverse local publications available from Moniaive Post Office.

Penpont is situated a mile and half from Thornhill and has a population of about 400 people.  There is a grocery store open seven days a week, pub, post office and a tearoom. Penpont has some interesting history. For example, Kirkpatrick Macmillan, the inventor of the rear wheel driven bicycle was born nearby in 1813.  Penpont was also the birthplace to the famous 19th century explorer of Africa Joseph Thomson. The residents of Penpont are currently trying to put together a small permanent exhibit to commemorate his life.  It is hard to talk about Penpont without mentioning Andy Goldsworthy, the great modern outdoor artist who lived in Penpont for many years.  He left his mark with a famous sculpture “Cairn at Penpont” which can be seen from the A702 between Penpont and Thornhill.

Thornhill is the main village in the area located eight miles from Tynron on the A76 and fourteen miles from Dumfries. It has bakeries, butcher shops, four pubs (two of which are pub restaurants), two large grocery stops, a chemist, hardware store, gift shops, ladies clothing shops, Chinese takeaway, a well known beauty therapist’s salon, three coffee shops and an outdoor sports shop (which sells fishing tackle/camping equiptment).

Dumfries is 18 miles from Tynron, about twenty-five minutes by car. It is the largest town between Carlisle and Edinburgh with full shopping facilities available on the outskirts of town. For full detail have a look at this link, http://www.britinfo.net/index_Dumfries.htm.
